Voltaire lo dejó bien claro en su famosa comparación entre un político y una dama: “Cuando un político dice que sí, es que quizá; cuando dice quizá, es que no, y si dice que no, entonces no es un político. En cambio, cuando una dama dice que no, es que quizá; cuando dice quizá, es que sí, y si dice que sí, entonces no es una dama”.
Ayer alguien me hizo recordar un libro que había leído, repitiendome casi literalmente su comienzo. La manía, o sana costumbre, de marcar partes de los libros, hizo que inmediatamente viniese a mi cabeza ese parrafo, ya que lo había señalado.

Ja sé que no cal anar gaire lluny per arribar a les conclusions de l’editorial del New York Times d’avui però, de vegades, sembla que necessitem que algú des de fora digui el que a molts ens resulta obvi.

Army Troglodytes in Spain

It is a basic principle of democracy that army officers do not publicly challenge the legitimacy of elected governments or talk about marching their troops into the capital to overturn decisions of Parliament. Yet that is just what has happened twice this month in Spain, a country whose 20th-century history compels it to take such threats seriously, even when the chances of insubordinate words’ leading to insubordinate actions seems quite unlikely.
The response of the center-left government of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has been appropriately firm, including the dismissal and arrest of one of the culprits, a senior army general. Regrettably, the center-right Popular Party, the main opposition group, seems more interested in making excuses for the officers than in defending the democratic order in which it has a vital stake.
Spain’s swift and smooth passage to modern democracy after the death of Francisco Franco in 1975 makes it easy to forget the horrors of the civil war and the brutal dictatorship that preceded it. Those nightmares began when right-wing army officers rebelled against an elected left-wing government they considered to be illegitimate and too deferential to regional separatists.
Spanish society, Spanish politicians and, for the most part, Spanish military officers have come a long way from that era, moderating their views and deepening their commitment to democratic give-and-take. But the Popular Party has had a hard time getting over its electoral defeat nearly two years ago, days after the terrorist bombings of commuter trains in Madrid. It has never really accepted the democratic legitimacy of that vote. It is time for the Popular Party to move ahead. Spanish democracy needs and deserves vigorous bipartisan support.

Recuerdo una frase popular, obviamente no es mia, de mis años iniciáticos en la universidad “Hay que partir del yo para llegar a lo político”. Ese partir del yo para llegar a alguna parte (aun sigo sin entender donde queda lo político) puede ser aplicado a todas las esferas de la vida; además, su contrario, partir de alguna parte para llegar al yo, también es lícito. Inducción - Deducción, todo vale, mientras haya método, ¿no?.
¿Leer nos puede llevar a alguna parte?. ¿Alguna parte nos puede llevar a leer?. ¿Se puede llegar al mundo de las drogas a partir de la ciencia?
El mundo actual, en su forma y su actividad ¿a quién debe más, a los abstemios o a los no abstemios? Exclusivamente a estos últimos. Son los abstemios quienes han creado y desarrollado las ciencias. Les debemos las más bellas creaciones artísticas. Son ellos los que han ofrecido al humano deleite las obras máravillosas de la imaginación poética, quienes han hecho surgir de las profundidades íntimas de su sensibilidad las producciones más nobles del arte musical, para hacer un presente a los hombres […] …

Esto que es aplicable al mundo de las artes ¿puede ser aplicado al mundo de las ciencias?. ¿Es la ciencia un arte?. ¿Debería comenzar a drogarme con intensidad?. ¿Ciencia, arte son drogas?.

A veces estas cosas que llegan a tu email, igual que al de muchos más que están en la lista y que la mayoría de las veces no conoces, no deberían pasarse por alto ya que animan a aquellos que nos damos tiempo y más tiempo para no escribir las diferentes teorías que vamos abrazando.
TEORÍA DEL INFIERNO
La siguiente pregunta fue hecha en un examen trimestral de química en la Universidad de Toronto. La respuesta de uno de los estudiantes fue tan “profunda” que el profesor quiso compartirla con sus colegas, vía Internet, razón por la cual podemos todos disfrutar de ella.
